What is vegetable tanned leather and why is it so amazing?
By Viva 's
Vegetable tanning is a pure and natural process without the use of harmful chemicals. Vegetable-tanned leather is tanned using tannins only found in nature, such as tree bark, wood, leaves, fruits, and roots. Such tanning process takes between one and three months time.
Contrary of vegetable-tanned leather is chrome-tanned, the most popular method in fashion industry since more than 80% of global leather production uses chrome-tanning. Chrome leather is no longer natural and it has a plastic feel and look. Chromium salts are very harmful to the human health and to the environment. That’s the reason we’ve decided to only use vegetable-tanned leather for Viva's products.
Most fashion companies still prefer using chrome tanned leather, because in fashion everything needs to be fast and things are always changing. The chrome tanning process is faster, cheaper and uses less leather which is a win-win for most productions. But not for us, our main goal is to work in a sustainable way.
Vegetable-tanned leather is a sustainable and responsible choice. The quality of such leather is higher so the products are durable and therefore a long-term investment.
